Advance Living Room presents AM Fever Dreams

Advanced Living Room presents: AM Fever Dream. How does it feel to be lost between stations on the AM radio dial? Rabbit Box Theater invites you to an evening of songs and soundscapes that seem just out of reach. This is a unique experience for attendees to be bathed in AM transmission white noise, distant talk radio detritus, thin mercurial frequencies and waves of silver space static, all intercut with live performances of imagined 70s soft rock, the lost strumming of an acoustic singer-songwriter, and serenades of a wavy haired lothario with a broken heart. The format for the evening is an AM radio sound bath with meditative song performances by Afterlife Giftshop and their guest collaborators, Ben von Wildenhaus, Billie Bloom, and Dustin Lanker.

Doors at 7pm - Show begins at 8pm

John Lensing ~ The Weight of Love album release

John Lensing ~ The Weight of Love album release

The Rabbit Box is excited to welcome singer-songwriter, John Lensing ~ The Weight of the Love, album release with special guests, Claire Conway and Meiwei.

Doors at 6:30 / Music begins at 7:30pm

Tickets $12 adv. / $15 day of show : https://givebutter.com/JohnLensing

John Lensing started out as a street performer, writing songs and driving around the US to play them for people. Slowly, this led to playing shows and festivals, but the goal has always been the same. To make people care — about others, themselves, and things that sometimes hurt to care about.
His genre-blurring songwriting has brought him on tours all across North America and Europe. Most notably playing a showcase at the Sommer in Altona festival (Hamburg), and being named "an artist to watch" by No Depression.  -  Listen Here

Raised on country radio in her hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, Claire Conway was drawn to storytelling from an early age. She wrote her first song at ten years old, and soon became eager to grow as an artist in any way she could: painting, writing poems, playing guitar. Claire's latest EP, "Be Good," is both a product of the pandemic and a deeply personal project years in the making. Recorded in a Los Angeles apartment while quarantined, it echoes all-too-familiar themes of isolation and self-discovery, divulging the details with unmatched intimacy. "Amsterdam" is a nod to the narrative at the heart of her last EP, while singles "Be Good" and "I Don't Wanna Be Alone" read more like diary entries, chronicling a story of a young woman discovering herself, the way she relates to others, and her place in the middle of it all.  -   Listen Here

-Meiwei is indie-folk singer songwriter Michelle Meiwei Mouw.
Meiwei’s debut release, “Unusual Spring” was recorded and released from her college apartment in May of 2020. The song was featured on Sound of Boston’s Local Mix and WGHB’s Mass Mix. Since then, Meiwei has moved out West and gone on to release her first LP, “On This Trail Till I’m Home”.  -   Listen Here

The Bushwick Bookclub Seattle Presents When the Elephants Dance

The Bushwick Bookclub Seattle Presents original music inspired by When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe.

In this mesmerizing twist on historical fiction, untamed tales of wartime Philippines converge with the captivating allure of folklore, culminating in a profound celebration of human resilience and boundless love amid the chaos of war.

“Lush, arresting, and fiercely beautiful, When The Elephants Dance unfolds like a shadowy fugue, a waltz between light and dark, between frailty and strength. Holthe has created a gripping portrait of the Philippines and its struggle for self-determination.” – Linda Watanabe McFerrin, author of Hand of Buddha

Heads up: this spellbinding novel is upfront about wartime traumas, including death, torture, and assault.

The Triple Door Presents Myriam Gendron, Jim White & Marisa Anderson

The Triple Door Presents Myriam Gendron, Jim White & Marisa Anderson

The Triple Door Presents Montreal based singer-songerwriter guitartist, Myriam Gendron with Jim White and Marisa Anderson at The Rabbit Box.

Prior to her debut album, Montreal based Myriam Gendron's primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others, accompanying herself on guitar. Through her day job, working at a Montreal bookstore, Myriam discovered the poems of American writer, Dorothy Parker, who was better known for her cutting wit than her verse. Inspired by Parker's words, Myriam wrote music to accompany a suite of them, then recorded the results in her bedroom. These recordings were issued as her debut LP, and continue to delight listeners who discover them, with their freshness, clarity and humor. After a brief hiatus, Myriam began exploring the complex folk traditions of Quebec (and beyond), recording the 2LP, Ma délire, which combines traditional and original songs (largely in French) with arrangements that make space for avant-garde musical interludes by such folks as guitarist Bill Nace (Body/Head) and renowned jazz percussionist Chris Corsano. Mayday is an even more syncretic fusion of these elements. Most of the songs are original, in both English and French, and blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. Additional players this time include drummer Jim White (Dirty Three), guitarist Marisa Anderson, Montreal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad/avant dynamism), Bill Nace and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn actually gets the final “word”). Beautiful work.

The collaboration between renowned drummer Jim White and acclaimed guitarist Marisa Anderson is a natural union of two of the most intuitive players and listeners working in music.

Luke Bella & Eli West

Luke Bella & Eli West

The Rabbit Box presents Luke Bella & Eli West this summer, August 25th.

Doors at 7pm ~ Music begins at 8pm

Tickets $18 adv. / $20 day of show : https://givebutter.com/LukeBella-EliWest

Luke Bulla has been singing and playing music most of his life, touring with and singing in his family band from age four, Luke took up the fiddle at seven. Over the course of the next few years, he won the National Fiddle Contest (in Weiser, Idaho) six times in his respective age categories. His seventh win came in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen, making him the youngest to have earned the title at the time.
In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder, which earned him his first Grammy Award. Luke was a member of the John Cowan Band. Luke has also performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Russ Barenberg Trio, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs, to name a few. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Aoife O’Donovan and more. Since 2009, Luke has been touring with Lyle Lovett.
Luke released an LP, Who Loves You Better, produced by Bryan Sutton in May 2016. After many years as a sideman, Luke is currently touring the country playing solo performances. https://lukebulla.com   / https://lukebulla1.bandcamp.com

It’s always illuminating to ask an artist how they understand music, but Eli West’s perspective is nothing short of ground-breaking. A trained designer, he sees music architecturally, visualizing his compositions spatially. It’s a highly unusual way to think about music, tied to his verdant natural world of the Pacific Northwest. On his new album, Tapered Point of Stone, West lays out original songs and tunes like houses built by hand, weaving their melodies into the setting of acoustic roots music that first inspired him. Recorded in 2020, just before everything shut down, the album brings together West’s favored quartet of musicians: Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) on mandolin and guitar, Christian Sedelmeyer (Jerry Douglas) on fiddle, himself on mandolin, guitar, and banjo, and Clint Mullican (Watchhouse) on bass. This is the third album this quartet has built, including solo albums for Marlin and Sedelmeyer, and at this point they operate on a near-magical wavelength. As both a noted arranger, songwriter, performer, and composer, West has been crafting a Northwest-centric roots music aesthetic through earlier collaborations with Cahalen Morrison and John Reischman, and recordings with Bill Frisell and Dori Freeman. Tapered Point of Stone showcases West’s collaborative nature. Elidoes.bandcamp.com

The Bad Things with special guests The Rusty Cleavers

The Bad Things with special guests The Rusty Cleavers

Seattle's premier junkyard cabaret act The Bad Things (www.thebadthings.com) return to the Rabbit Box for a night of mournful sea shanties, drunken waltzes and degenerate folk music. This will be another trip down memory lane as The Bad Things revisit their catalog that spans over 20 years. In fact, their formative months were spent on the sidewalks of the Pike Place Market, just steps from the Rabbit Box (formerly Can Can, formerly Patti Summers Cabaret) and they played their first shows on this very stage. Some wild nights for sure.  Don't fear however, it won't all be about nostalgia. The band has been busy writing new material so expect to hear some new favorites scattered amongst the dusty old relics.

Opening the evening is Tacoma's Rusty Cleavers (www.therustycleavers.com). Four weirdos with a shared love of bluegrass, punk, jazz, funk, and whatever Tom Waits is. When these four odd-balls get together, their voices combine for sometimes gruff, sometimes sweet harmonies on songs about lust misuse, trust issues, and dying young. Their instruments create a twangy cacophonous orchestra of metal and wood that has been bringing audiences to a compassionate frenzy at hundreds of performances across the Pacific Northwest for the past decade. This is not your backwards grandpa’s or creepy uncle’s redneck bluegrass. This is queer-loving, Black Lives Matter proclaiming, progressive pickin’ from the heart of Tacoma.

Leon Majcen is a musician whose story is one of resilience and determination. He grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida, the son of Bosnian war refugees who had fled their homeland in search of a better life for their children. From a young age, Leon was drawn to the power of storytelling through music, particularly the work of artists like Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Bob Dylan, and Guy Clark. Leon began playing in local bars while still in high school, honing his craft and building a loyal following. After graduating, he decided to pursue his passion for music in New York City, while attending college at New York University and playing shows around town. After a while, Leon came to the realization that the hustle and bustle of the city wasn't where his heart was at. He returned home to Florida and took a job at a commercial fishing dock, filleting and packing fish while he planned his next move. And that move was to Nashville, where Leon hoped to make his mark as a singer-songwriter. Since arriving in Nashville, Leon has continued to develop his unique blend of Americana, folk, and country music, drawing on his experiences and his love of the outdoors to craft songs that are both poignant and powerful. With his heartfelt lyrics, soulful voice, and deft guitar work, Leon has built a strong following in Music City and beyond. He is currently set to release three new singles starting on June 2nd, leading up to a full-length album in the Fall, as well as embark on a tour across the United States, playing shows and searching for the next great fishing spot along the way. https://leonmajcen.com/epk

Megan Diana is pioneering a new genre: DREAM COUNTRY DISCO. What does this mean? Take your favorite vintage keyboard — hello Wurlitzer, hello Fender Rhodes — put them through an echo/delay pedal, add lush, dreamy layers of French horn and vocals, anchor them with throwback drum grooves, and top it all off with space echoed pedal steel guitar (thank you Raymond Richards). After the release of her debut album Women in My Head, Megan has been hard at work touring the world and sharing her second album Cabin Fever, produced by Richards, and released in October 2023.

Follow along @hellomegandiana and listen to Cabin Fever wherever you get your music.

Just Clark is a singer-songwriter reviving the roots of American-made music. Digging into a woody sound that echoes through the hollers, Clark's music embodies a timeless resonance that harks back to the cherished sounds of classic Americana folk. From poet to picker, the native Texan conjures a sound as bright as the Lonestar herself. https://www.thejustclark.band/

In a dozen albums spanning three decades of recording, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer has tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia nervosa, shoplifting, reproduction, the French Resistance, adolescent malaise, LGBTQ issues, and the Christian Right. Her hits include “I Kissed A Girl”—the first openly gay-themed song ever to crack the Billboard Top 20—and the alt-rock anthem “Supermodel” featured in the film “Clueless”. Sobule was one half of The Jill & Julia Show, providing music while actor Julia Sweeney contributes storytelling. Jill is considered a pioneer in crowdfunding and is constantly exploring and creating new models for artists in an ever-changing music industry. Her latest record is “Nostalgia Kills”, produced by Ben Lee and released on her own Pinko Records label. Jill’s theater credits include a musical adaptation of the Broadway classic “Yentl”, “Prozak and the Platypus”, and “Times Square”. Her latest, “F*ck 7th Grade”, was postponed due to Covid, but was performed and filmed for three days at a make-shift drive-in over the Summer. The musical is a finalist for the Lambda Literary awards in LGBTQ Drama category this June. https://www.jillsobule.com/

Two-time GRAMMY® nominee Tracy Bonham is a classically trained violinist, pianist, and vocalist turned alt-rock singer-songwriter. About Taylor Kingman

In a time drenched in escapism, where an unceasing barrage of synthetic shine promises comfort and relief from facing the complexity of our natures, Taylor Kingman's new album Hollow Sound is an antithetical long night in a solitary cave, with nothing but a small fire and a hard look inward to keep you company.

Between his work fronting TK & The Holy Know-Nothings and his 2017 solo debut Wannabe, Kingman is no stranger to the darkness. But here he transcends the desolate rock bottom, as Hollow Sound whispers, then howls us into that place beyond brokenness where breathing begins again. To listen deeply to these songs is to lay down naked on the wet, unforgiving earth, pushing the ground through your fingers; it is to be soothed by the wholeness of who we are, filth and all. Kingman pulls no punches with his writing, and requires us to listen with the same honesty.

It's been hard for me to look at myself naked
(from "Dead Bird's Wing")

Anyone who has journeyed down to the impossible darkness of their own abyss — and then awoken the next morning to find the unexpected beginnings of a newly-drawn roadmap — will resonate with the themes of shame and forgiveness in these songs.

Strawberry Cobbler Fundraiser featuring Midpak & Lushy

Join us for the launch of the IndieGoGo campaign for Strawberry Cobbler: a short film written by Wylie Soltes, produced by Nathan Rosenburg, and directed by Ethan Hawthorne-Dallas

Saturday, March 9th is a jam-packed party for the short film, "Strawberry Cobbler" -- featuring the musical wizardry of Midpak and Lushy, fresh made cobbler, and themed drinks.

Strawberry Cobbler follows Thomas, a young farmhand, during his last day living in Washington State’s rural Skagit Valley. Under the weight of his family’s expectations, Thomas has agreed to move into New York City with his girlfriend, a place he’s never been, and hardly understands. As the clock counts down on their departure, his anxiety surrounding the commitment reaches a boiling point, fueling a string of impulsive, and disruptive decisions.

Come meet the filmmakers, find out more about the film and it's production, and help bring it to life. There's plenty of cobbler to go around!

Tickets $20 adv. / $25 door: https://givebutter.com/strawberry

Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early-’70s singer/songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer and songwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following. His refusal to shape his music - which crosses between folk-rock, jazz, progressive, pop, and classical - to anyone else’s expectations allows him to hold onto a large and dedicated cult following, without ever achieving the stardom that his talent seemed to merit.

Joachim Cooder grew up surrounded by music alongside his father, legendary guitarist Ry Cooder who took him on the road at an early age on the drums, playing both live and in the studio. These touring and recording projects allowed him to share stages and recordings with Johnny Cash, Ali Farka Touré, V. M. Bhatt, Steve Earle, John Lee Hooker, Dr. John, Nick Lowe, and most notably the award winning project The Buena Vista Social Club.

Joachim discovered the joys of playing an electric mbira through a small amp, and the sound that emanated was inspired by the world music that always captivated him, “I’m always hearing some sort of defunct cosmic ice cream truck in my head – that’s the sound I’m after with my mbiras and tank drums and other tuned percussion."

In 2020 Nonesuch Records released Over That Road I’m Bound, the songs of Uncle Dave Macon and Joachim’s unique and celebrated re-imagining of these early country songs and earning Joachim #1 Most Added at Americana, and a Top 10 Album & Single (US & UK). Here in 2023, the new album is being wrapped up for a
February 2024 release.

The Secret Beach "Songs From The Secret Beach" (Victory Pool Records, 2022) is at once an exercise in restraint, as well as an arrestingly lush exploration of sonic possibility. The wisdom exists between the cracks, with a nuance that could easily be overlooked. However, The Secret Beach's debut takes a courageous and uninhibited stab at honesty, and it may be the best kept secret you discover this year. New single "IYDLMLMG" https://youtu.be/8qhrb0CKULM

Kate Dinsmore is a singer-songwriter based in Seattle, WA. A dynamic performer and vocalist, Dinsmore brings her songs to the stage with an undeniable presence. Her music is powerful and emotional, with influences ranging from Jazz to Rock to Americana. Dinsmore’s performances quickly gained a following in Seattle, allowing her to open for notable artists such as Pat Benatar, Colin Hay, and the Dip. Her voice is triumphant and intimate. The perfect soundtrack to dropping off the last of your ex’s stuff and driving off into the sunset. - https://www.katedinsmoremusic.com/home/#about

With vocal stylings reminiscent of jazz classics, Blair Borax delivers a unique blend of unapologetic songwriting that tackles the taboo and irresistibly catchy pop melodies that stay with you for days. She conjures a vocal charm somewhere in between Regina Spektor and Cat Clyde, wordsmithing inspired by folk songwriting greats like John Prine and Paul Simon, and tender timely vulnerability akin to Haley Heynderickx and Big Thief’s Adrienne Lenker.
Borax's brand new sophomore record, "Tender Lately," is a poignant map of the human experience, weaving the listener through intimate personal stories and universal human truths, and leaving the listener with gentle reminders to quiet the inner critic, find joy in small things, and embrace the precious brevity of our time on Earth. With more sophisticated songwriting, a newfound confidence in fingerpicking guitar, and a move towards honest acoustic folk production, Tender Lately is Borax’s most compelling work to date. - www.blairborax.com
